Deck of Scarlet Review + First Impressions by ThatsSoYin
Youtuber ThatsSoYin has created this makeup look in her Deck of Scarlet Review video. Watch her video, read the transcript of the video + images with the steps in order to recreate this gorgeous look:
Hey, everybody, it’s Jasmine. So, today, I have a… I want to call this a review video [Laughs] of the Deck of Scarlet July to August palette. Deck of Scarlet did send this to me, but that’s not going to change my opinion or honesty about the palette because the one thing that I noticed is that this is a $30 palette, and I want to see if it’s worth it. I’m going to show it to you guys, and on the website, it says it’s a $139 value, so we’re going to see if it’s worth it in that price point, too.
I got the box last night, and it looks like this. I’m pretty sure everyone is going to get some type of card. Mine just says, “Jasmine, enjoy your new July to August palette. Thanks for the love, XO the Team Scarlett.”
I also got a little note thing, and it kind of just tells you about the team. It says, “Hello Stunner, your wait is finally over. Prepare to get hooked. If color is your drug of choice, you’re in the right place. Bold, decked in, and ultra-hot, our limited-edition palettes are perfectly collectible and filled with color so naughty, they should be X-rated. Come play alongside your favorite YouTubers as they reveal their best kept secrets and work wonders with each palette. Now go ahead and get your sexy on, Deck of Scarlet.”
Now, my tongue is kind of swollen, that’s why I’m having trouble reading and probably trouble talking in this video.
So, like I said, it is $30 a box. It’s a bi-monthly subscription, so there is going to be a new palette every two months, and every palette on the website… It says it’s limited edition and unique. So, the palette that I have today is a collaboration with Nazanin Kavari.
Here’s what the box looks like. It comes with an eyeliner, and it comes with the palette. I took a look at the palette last night, and I was looking at it, and I was like, “I don’t know if this is my cup of tea.” [Laughs] It is really peach-toned and… I don’t know, it’s really bright for my liking, so I want to see what kind of look I’m going to create, see if I like it or not–the pigmentation, the longevity. I’m going to come back in and do some check-ins with you guys and see how the makeup lasts and performs.
So, we’re just going to go straight in. Now, my brushes do look dirty, but I did that color swish thing where you just run it in the little sponge and then it gets clean; it’s just stained.
We’re just going to go in with a “Sho Cute”…we’re going to go in with “Sho Cute.” It looks like it has shimmer, but it’s fine…it’s okay. We’re just going to go in and kind of apply this into the crease. Not that pigmented, but we could just build it up, no worries. I actually thought it would be better if I zoomed you guys in… So, now we’re just going to take “Feeling Peachy,” which is a peach shade… We’re going to apply this right on top. There we go. Mm-hmm, yes. That’s what I’m talking about.
The look of these shadows on the eyes… You can definitely see it, it’s blending out really nice. It is, I want to say, a light formula, as opposed to a really buttery formula… It’s hard to explain because I was touching some ColourPop eyeshadows the other day, and I was also touching some Shop Miss A pressed powders…shadows, and those are extremely buttery. They’re extremely smooth, almost like a cream. These ones are definitely that nicely pressed shadow, doesn’t give off a kickback in it. It’s pretty soft, but it’s still easy to blend. That was the worst description I’ve ever said about a shadow in my life.
We’re going to actually take the blush called “Baby Doll,” and I’m just going to apply this… Ooh, okay, not a lot of kickback. We’re going to apply this a little lower, just to deepen it up just a little bit…try to get a really nice pink look…a little pink eye, if you will. I’ll blend this in here. I’m really curious on what this brown is going to look like because it’s more of like a cold-tone brown, so I’m going to take that on the Morphe R39, and I’m going to bring this really low.
I think that this brown should have been a little bit more warm because I think that it’s starting to make the look a little muddy. It’s weird. I’m going to blend out everything with a clean brush–this is the Sigma E40–and then, I’m just going to try again with this brown. This brown isn’t as pigmented as I would like it. I’m not going to lie to you guys, I really do think that my ColourPop press powders are just a little bit more pigmented. This one, it’s a lot more “building up” to get the color intensity.
I mean, that’s a pretty good and bad thing because you don’t want to just sit there and continuously dig and dig and dig until your eyeshadow… But at the same time, you don’t want it to be too pigmented where you have to keep blending it out. So, I mean, so far, it’s kind of like I have to do quite a bit of building up to really deepen this peach, and now the peach is getting a little lost, so that’s getting really awkward.
So, now I’m mixing “Feeling Peachy” and “Baby Doll,” and I’m going to apply this right on top. I feel like the only way I’m going to save this look is if I take my finger in “Taj” and… This is just a little bit chalky, okay… Because I’ve never done any finger swatches with this palette… I only strictly went in with the brush. This one is chalky and for $30, I don’t know. I feel like… The Tartelette Tease palette is $30 as well, and that will give you six shades, but they are that really nice Tarte formula that’s not going to be chalky.
I did get a lot of fallout, so I’m just going to sweep that off with a clean brush and… This is kind of like what the top eye looks like. I’m not a huge fan of it, but I mean, it works. It blends together and that’s all that really matters. I wouldn’t enjoy it if it was so many different formulas in this palette that didn’t mesh well together, so at least they mesh well together. I’m just going to go in with that eyeliner. I’m pretty sure it’s a brown liner, so that’s going to kind of tie in with that brown shadow that we have on our eyes. We’re also going to see the longevity of this as well… This is a brush-tip pen, one of my favorites.
My eyeliner wasreally bomb, it was really good. [Laughs] I really do love the formula of this: it’s not too wet, but not too dry, and then I really do love brush-tip applicators. Those are my favorite. So, we’re going to try to finish this eye up… Trying to see if my lower lash line and lashes will just tie everything together. So, I’m going to take a smaller brush, and I’m going to take “Sho Cute,” and I’m going to take “Feeling Peachy” again, and I’m going to run this right here. Right on top of that, we’re taking “Baby Doll”… Kind of more of a peachy lash line down here.
For the inner corner highlight, we’re taking Yasmin… Fun fact, if you don’t know me, I hate it when people call me “Yasmin.” I really do hate it. It’s one of my pet peeves. When people at my store see my nametag, and then they say, “Is your name Jasmine or Yasmin?” What? Excuse me, it’s a “J.”
For blush, I’m going to take “Baby Doll” and I’m really scared to dig into this because this is a hot pink. Mm-hmm. It sheers out, that’s really weird. It sheers out, so it’s not too intense, which I can appreciate with blushes. I feel like blushes are pretty tricky because everyone kind of craves that really intense color, but then at the same time, for blush, you don’t want to overdo it, or else you’re going to look like a clown. Yeah, so this one’s pretty good, and this one… I know that I can build it up, so that’s really nice. I think I’m satisfied with that.
Then, we’re going to take Morphe M501… Mm-hmm. Okay, highlight… I really like this because it’s really soft, soft as in it doesn’t accentuate anything. It’s almost like it blends into the skin really nice, so it makes my skin look like it’s a glow from within–do you see that–instead of a line of highlight. It blends out really well. So, I think on this side, I’m just going to finish off the look, and I’ll be right back.
While I wait for my lashes to dry, I want to go ahead and do the lip portion. So, what I really like about it… It just has a little lid for the lips, and it prevents the powders to go into the creams, and I really, really enjoy that. Now, I’m going to tell you right now, this shade, I can never pull it off. So, we’re going to go into the nude, and I’m just going to take this on a regular concealer brush. So far, it’s really creamy from the brush and to the lips. It is… Hmm.
I have my verdict [INAUDIBLE 00:10:25]: so, it is a nice color… This is as peachy I would ever go without a lip liner, and what I see in the center of lips… Because my lips, they don’t have lip fillers, so they’re not entirely smooth. So, from a real girl’s lips, I can tell you that it’s not fully pigmented right here. Right in the center, it’s not completely pigmented. I don’t know, let’s try and build it up one more layer.
So, yes, you can build it up, but I think my main concern about this palette in particular… Yes, it is travel-friendly, and yes, you have everything that you need in here, but at the same time, it’s like, “What do you do when you want to reach into the lip product one more time? You’ve got to bring this whole palette with you, right?” That’s kind of where I’m at, so I’m just going to finish off the rest of my makeup again, and I will talk more about the palette.
Alright, so I have you guys zoomed out so you guys can see the completed look…everything on my face. This is a really cute palette. I’m not going to lie, this look is really nice for those who really enjoy a minimalistic yet monochromatic look. Like I said, this is a peachy palette, and I remember Deck of Scarlet saying that you can cancel if you want to, you can choose a specific box if you want to, if you’re not feeling this palette or the next palette, you can always skip it. So, that’s really nice you have options for you. But, so far, this palette… I’m not going to completely dis because it is a collaboration palette, and I don’t want to be like, “Girl, you’re doing it wrong.” No, I don’t want to do that, but at the same time, I want to give my opinion and my critique to this.
Now, the colors are really nice. I really do appreciate the colors. Like I said, this brown is a little too cool-toned for this look, but I think I made it work as an all-over lid shade. The formula, however, it’s not something that I would necessarily go for. I really that person who loves her eyeshadows pretty creamy and really easy to blend, that are a little bit more pigmented than this. I did get a really good color payoff, but that was with two to three layers of building up. So, if you’re that person who loves light makeup that can build it up when needed, this is a beautiful palette for you.
I’m going to see how long these lasts. I don’t know how long I’m going to be out for, but I am going to check back in a couple of hours and kind of see if it fades or not, how long the lipstick lasts for… I think I might have to take this palette with me out, so that’s going to be really fun…really weird because I’ve never just taken a palette with me before. But, we will see, and I will be right back.
Alright, so I’m in the fitting room, and it’s been about five hours. It’s all worn off in the center. [Laughs] So far, I look…looks pretty good. Cheeks… Looks pretty good. Is the blush still on? I don’t know. My [INAUDIBLE 00:13:53] a little blotchy, but that’s me, not the blush. Eyes look really good. Eyes are probably A minus, so, yeah.
[INAUDIBLE 00:14:03] do you have something in your mouth? Hey!
Did he just growl at me? Did you just growl at me? Who do you think you’re talking to?
Alright, you guys, it’s been a total of eight hours, and this is what my face looks like, shadow and all. I’m going to be so real…at first, I was like, “Girl, I do not like this palette. It is… I don’t think it’s going to be worth it.” But you know what? After thinking about it the whole day, after looking at myself in the mirror the whole day, I can tell you this… Okay, let’s break it down: my lower lash… Carmelo.
My lower lash line, the shadow’s almost all rubbed off. I’m looking in the viewfinder… It’s barely pink down there, so, I mean, it didn’t last there, but as for my top lash…as for my lid, it looks like it’s still there. It definitely has faded just a little bit, but I do have to say that I am not a user of eyeshadow primers or wetting my brush, and I have two reasons for that. One, I think that eye bases are a waste of time, and I just feel like that eye bases that I’ve used… I’ve used about 10 in my whole entire life and none of them have ever worked out for me, and I’m just like, “Girlfriend, if 10 different eyeshadow primers don’t work, I just think that…” I can’t get one to work for me. So, there is that problem, and I believe that if I should wet a brush… I think that’s doing too much. If the pigmentation is there, then it is there. If the formula is pigmented enough, then it will be pigmented enough without me having to wet my brush.
You can still see the brown and the pink, which I can really appreciate. Now, as for my cheeks, the blush has faded just a little bit and I’m okay with that, that’s cool, I don’t really care about blush as much as a bronzer. I think bronzer is a little bit more important, in my opinion. [Laughs] But as for the highlight, it looks like [INAUDIBLE 00:16:09], and I think that’s pretty good because it doesn’t look chunky, it doesn’t look too glittery or flaky, so it’s really nice–it really blends into the skin. I think the shadows in here really do blend into the skin very seamlessly, so I really do appreciate that.
This color selection isn’t probably one that I would lean towards. I don’t know, I just think… Like I said earlier, that this one is way too cool-toned. These two, they have shimmer, so there’s no real transition color, if you will, in this palette. I feel like they could kind of make this shade just a little bit closer to each other and then kind of squeeze in one more.
I want to say they are more of a drier formula. They do have a little bit of pigmentation to them and… Here I swatched it all on my fingers. They do have a bit of pigmentation to them. They’re not extremely pigmented or anything, but once you work it up, it’s beautiful, and they are dry. So, if you’re more of a buttery-textured eyeshadow user, then you are probably not going to like these, but they are buttery in a sense where they don’t have kick…
Excuse me. They don’t have kickback. I’ve been holding in the burp for a really long time, and it just came out, and I didn’t know. That’s awkward.
There’s a lot I want to say about the lips. I do appreciate that there are two lids, so this keeps separate from the powders. I did apply it right after I did that check-in, and then I did tell you guys that it kind of clumped up in the middle, but after I did that second reapply application [Laughs], it kind of stained my lips, so now, nothing is on my lips, it’s just kind of stained from that peachy-ness.
But I think my main concern is: would it have been better if there was an actual lipstick, rather than just these two in a pan? Because I wouldn’t want to just travel with this to the mall and bring a brush with me and just scoop it up and then apply it on my lips. I think that’s a bit of a hassle. So, I was thinking about that, and I don’t know. I mean, I get it, it’s travel-friendly, and everything’s very conveniently in one palette… I do want to mention the eyeliner–I think the eyeliner is… I think this might be a dupe for Kat Von D tattoo liner, and it’s really amazing, honestly. The shape of the tip is almost identical. The size, I mean… They should be the same size, I don’t see why not. It’s just really nice, pigmented, and it did not fade. Let me rub my eyeliner for you to see if flakes off.
Hi, it’s me again. I just wanted to say that while I rubbed my eyes, I didn’t realize that I rubbed off my eyeshadow. So, keep that in mind.
No, nothing. Nothing. So, this is really good, long-lasting… I did not have watery eyes today, so I don’t know if it’s waterproof, but I can tell you that the Kat Von D liner is $20, and you get both of these for $30, so if you think about it, cut these two in half… Fifteen dollars apiece… I’m saying that it’s probably worth it.
I was very skeptical in the beginning of this tutorial because it wasn’t giving me a lot of color payoff, but I think after you do two, three layers and work your way through that first layer, it starts to get a little bit more pigmented. I do have to say that it does have teeny bit of fallout, but it’s not as much as a lot of palettes out there, so it is worth it for that price. I also do want to note that, again, it is a bi-monthly subscription, and I do have to say, as far as that $139 value that I said earlier, or something strange like that, that… Girl, get out of here with that $139 value. Deck of Scarlet, where did you guys get the calculations? Because I really don’t see $139 in front of me. [Laughs]
When I think of that big of a price point, I think Natasha Denona shadows and I… Wow. Natasha, she’s up there. She is up there, and I don’t think that these really compare to her shadows, personally. [Laughs] No shade, but her shadows are so buttery and so creamy, and they’re different in formula. This is a completely drier formula that isn’t a one swipe “oh my God, pigment” type of thing.
But this is a really good palette if you are starting out with makeup…if you’re a beginner and you’re like, “Hmm, I want to start getting into different color palettes that are affordable.”
Thirty dollars isn’t affordable. I’m going to be real with you, $30 is not affordable at all. I think that is as much as the Tartelette Tease palette, and I feel like if it was a palette individually, without the eyeliner… Thirty dollars, I would’ve probably been like, “Girl, that’s kind of high-end.”
Deck of Scarlet did send me a 10% off coupon for you guys, and I will link it in the description box below.
Alright, you guys, so that wraps up my verdict on the Deck of Scarlet July to August palette. I think everything through and through, was really good. Nothing too amazing, nothing too disappointing. I think that if you want to give it a try. then go ahead. If you’re not interested in this color selection, or if you want to wait for another type of YouTube collaboration of your favorite Youtuber, then definitely wait for that. They are having new palettes coming out every two months, so you can always wait. No problem waiting. You have all the time in the world, and yeah, I hope you guys really enjoyed this video. If you guys want to see me do more reviews, then let me know.
As always, I love you guys, and I’ll see you guys in my next one. Bye! Peace out, Girl Scouts!
